On 6 and 7 April, IDT conducted an instructor training webinar for 30 Air India Express Instructors. The goal was to train senior instructors and examiners on the proper methods of teaching UPRT to pilots.
The course covered the unique aspects of UPRT, focusing on how this training is to be delivered in simulators in order to achieve the following:
- Regulatory compliance
- Pilot competency development
- Pilot performance and behaviour assessment
- Proper utilisation of the simulator and available tools during the training
- Greater in-depth knowledge on UPRT academics
- Avoidance of negative training transfer
- Familiarisation with IDT’s Modular Operator Initial UPRT and Recurrent UPRT programs

The most engaging course I have attended in a long time. This helps me to be a better trainer and prepare pilots better for a “what if” scenario.

The basic concepts of aerodynamics were covered thoroughly without excessive use of formulae. However, adequate pictures and graphs, where required, were used to illustrate the point. The Zoom webinar was as good, if not better, than an actual classroom.
Although in the past, I have tried to explain this concept, many pilots don’t seem to grasp it. Besides many senior Airline Instructors/ Examiners have been so engrained into “minimise loss of altitude”, during stall recovery, that they re-teach the students the same. They applaud pilots who manage this, even if the pilot gets another 2 to 3 stick shaker events during recovery. Many of these senior pilots have to “unlearn” this concept which they haven’t been able to shake off in spite of the AF 447 and Turkish 737 Amsterdam crashes. This has to be drilled and reiterated.
I think this course must be given to all airline pilots as they have never been taught this before.

The importance of understanding the V-n diagram is a core element of UPRT training. Here, a typical airliner’s display indications are shown in relation to the g-loading. Instructors can use such information in assessing the techniques being applied by the trainee.
